Illustrations by Owen D. Pomery
I picked up Pomery’s The Hard Switch last summer after reading about it on a books of the year list. I’m not usually one for graphic novels but it was a glowing review and sci-fi is generally something I enjoy.
In any case, The Hard Switch was a super fun read and Pomery was able to cover a lot of ground with his characters - especially one sentient octopus that deserves their own series entirely. But it was the illustrations that really stood out to me, building a warm and inviting world for the reader. It reminds me of Herge’s Tin Tin ligne claire style, but with some unique twists.

Pomery trained as an architect which has given him a strong sense of how to visualise depth and space. This contrasts with his characters and objects, which are often playful and minimalist. The combination works very well and the scenes and characters come to life because they are set with an architects precise sense of composition and space. I loved the style as it balanced realism with warmth so well.
He’s got two graphic novels which you can pick up on Amazon: The Hard Switch and Victory Point. You can check out the rest of his work on his website here: http://owenpomery.com/
